6 Meter DX at ARS KMØT

M-Squared 6M5 Yagi in use at KMØT - Shown on the test mast.  Currently mounted at 69 feet.  At the beginning, a lot of the countries were worked with 100 watts.  During the 2001/2002 DX season, I could really tell that a full boat linear would have helped, oh well....

Radio equipment on 6 Meters started out as a FT-847 and it's 100 watts, which accounted for everything till about mid year 2000.  At that point, I moved to a HF Radio / Transverter solution.  The FT-1000MP and a SSB Electronics LT6S transverter.  It was also at this point I added the TE Systems brick for 300 watts of power on 50 MHz.

Below is my chart of DX countries worked on 6 Meters.  The 2001 / 2002 winter was outstanding for F2 propagation and new countries on 50 MHz.  Being only on the band a few years before that, I had no idea what to expect.  I did figure out quite quickly that this was a very special thing to participate in.  The sunspots give us this opportunity only every 11 years or so, one needs to take advantage of it!  Instead of looking at the years I have left on this planet, I now view the rest of my life as how many "sunspot cycle peaks" I will be around for to make the magic 100.  Any other 6 Meter DXers out there think the same way?!  Seriously, 6 Meter DX can be quite addicting as well as extremely challenging.  There is nothing else quite like it.  Here in the northern Midwest it is especially challenging.  Just a few hundred miles south, east or west can make a huge difference in whether you hear the station or work them at all.  I'm not complaining (well maybe I am) but good operating skills are sometimes not enough when the propagation gods are not smiling on you.  When they are, then look out for the QRM!  Having more / better antennas is the way to go as well for 6M.  As far as my 6 Meter antennas go, they need an update, but not this cycle.
